Repression

Repression: Freud's general term for the unconscious mind's process of ridding itself of conscious memories.

Much of the work of therapy has gone in the direction of enabling the client to recover repressed memories, feelings and states of mind.

Until these come back into consciousness they impede freedom of choice and keep us tied unduly to the past in a painful and unconstructive manner.
